Call to Worship

Remembering Missionaries Abroad during Covid-19

John 10:1-10

"Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.”

Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them. Therefore Jesus said again,

“Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Song of Praise

Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power,

and the glory, forever and ever.  Amen.

Scripture Reading

1Peter 2:19-25

God will bless you for this, if you endure the pain of undeserved suffering because you are conscious of his will. For what credit is there if you endure the beatings you deserve for having done wrong?

But if you endure suffering even when you have done right, God will bless you for it. It was to this that God called you, for Christ himself suffered for you and left you an example, so that you would follow in his steps. He committed no sin, and no one ever heard a lie come from his lips. When he was insulted, he did not answer back with an insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but placed his hopes in God, the righteous Judge.

Christ himself carried our sins in his body to the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness. It is by his wounds that you have been healed. You were like sheep that had lost their way, but now you have been brought back to follow the Shepherd and Keeper of your souls.

In the world where our news cycle is dominated by the Corona Virus and everything it is taking from us...

What is something beautiful you have received or discovered in the past two months?

How can you live like you believe God is going to do something good in the world?

Sermon

Acts 2:42-47

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Prayer for Unity

Dear God, we pray for our churches, our workplaces, our schools, and our communities.

We ask for your help in being a light in every place you’ve given us to walk. Give us care and wisdom as we live and work with one another. Help us to look to another’s needs before our own, and to always be ready to serve those around us by the power of your love within us. Even in every dark and broken place, for the times we feel like we’re barely making it through, give us your joy Lord, your grace, and the powerful presence of your peace.

We pray for all those in authority, for every leader of our nation, that you would give them your wisdom and discernment as they lead. We pray that their hearts would be directed first to you, that they would recognize where their true help and strength come from. We ask that you guard their coming and going, that you would be their refuge and their peace. We pray that you would surround every leader with wise counsel, that they would be humble and kind, patient and loving through their actions and words. We pray that their faith in you would be unwavering, strong, resolute, and firm.

In his sermon, Pastor Jim talked about...

Discipleship - Our commitment to

                    growing in the faith

Fellowship - Our commitment to

                  our relationship with one another

Worship - Our commitment to

pursue and encounter the living God

How are you actively engaging each of these aspects of our life as a Church? Which might you be neglecting?

How will you change your way of living in this season of social-distancing to grow in your Christian commitments?

Benediction

?

Each week for the past 26 years, we have closed our worship times by reading this ancient prayer together. Benediction is a Latin word meaning "Good Word." Christian worship services traditionally end with the clergy speaking a "Good Word" of blessing over the congregation. At Towne View, we affirm the priesthood of all believers and as a part of that, we read this benediction together, ending our time of community worship by speaking a good word of blessing over each other.
