Call to Worship

Psalm 118

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    his love endures forever.

Let Israel say:
    “His love endures forever.”

...

Open for me the gates of the righteous;
    I will enter and give thanks to the Lord.
This is the gate of the Lord
    through which the righteous may enter.
I will give you thanks, for you answered me;
    you have become my salvation.

The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
    and it is marvelous in our eyes.
The Lord has done it this very day;
    let us rejoice today and be glad.

Lord, save us!
    Lord, grant us success!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
    From the house of the Lord we bless you.
The Lord is God,
    and he has made his light shine on us.
With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession
    up to the horns of the altar.

You are my God, and I will praise you;
    you are my God, and I will exalt you.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    his love endures forever.

Leader: This is the day that the Lord has made.

All: We will Rejoice and be glad in it.

Song of Praise

Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever.  Amen.

Song of Worship

Pause

1) What does it mean for Jesus to be your king?

2) In this season of Covid-19, how can we proclaim          the Gospel of Jesus to our community?

Scripture Reading

?

Matthew 11:1-11

After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.
When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples  to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see:  The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.  This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
    who will prepare your way before you.’

Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

This is the Word of The Lord,

Thanks be to God.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Dear God,

Thank you for sending your Son and paving the way for our lives to be set free through Jesus' death on the cross. Thank you for what this day stands for - the beginning of Holy Week, the start of the journey towards the power of the cross, the victory of the Resurrection, and the rich truth that Jesus truly is our King of Kings.

"Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord..."

We give you praise and honor for your ways are righteous and true. We give you worship for you are holy and just. We will declare that your love stands firm forever. For your lovingkindness endures forever.

Thank you that your ways are far greater than our ways, your thoughts far deeper than our thoughts. Thank you that you had a plan to redeem. Thank you that you make all things new. Thank you that your face is towards the righteous, and you hear our prayers, and know our hearts. Help us to stay strong and true to you. Help us not to follow after the voice of the crowds, but to press in close to you, to hear your whispers, and seek after you alone.

We praise you, we bless you Lord! Thank you that you reign supreme and we are more than conquerors through the gift of Christ!

In the Mighty Name of Jesus,

Amen.                                                -Prayer from Debbie McDaniel

His Eye Is On The Sparrow

Grateful Reflection

For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies,

For the love which from our birth, over and around us lies:

CHORUS: Lord of all to thee we raise, this our grateful hymn of praise.

For the wonder of each hour of the day and of the night,

Hill and vale and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light:

CHORUS: Lord of all to thee we raise, this our grateful hymn of praise.

For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child,

Friends on earth and friends above: for all gentle thoughts and mild:

CHORUS: Lord of all to thee we raise, this our grateful hymn of praise.

For the joy of ear and eye, for the heart and mind’s delight,

For the mystic harmony linking sense to sound and sight:

CHORUS: Lord of all to thee we raise, this our grateful hymn of praise.

Pause

1) Where have you encountered beauty this week?

2) What has made you pause to be thankful this week?

3) If you were going to add a verse to this classic              hymn, what would the theme be?

Read Matthew 21:1-11

?

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them,

“Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

   “Say to Daughter Zion,

    ‘See, your king comes to you,

      gentle and riding on a donkey,

       and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

     “Hosanna to the Son of David!”

     “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

     “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”The crowds answered...

“This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Pause

1) Often our world today feels like it is divided into the red team        and the blue team, what does it mean in a politically divided        landscape to be on team Jesus?

2) "Winning" has become an idol in our contemporary culture,         what does the humble Jesus on a donkey have to offer in a           world of competition?

?

Song of Response

Benediction

Each week for the past 26 years, we have closed our worship times by reading this ancient prayer together. Benediction is a Latin word meaning "Good Word." Christian worship services traditionally end with the clergy speaking a "Good Word" of blessing over the congregation. At Towne View, we affirm the priesthood of all believers and as a part of that, we read this benediction together, ending our time of community worship by speaking a good word of blessing over each other.
